Ambitious European tech entrepreneurs can bid for a slice of Google's $100m Google is launching a venture capital fund to invest in promising European technology companies. The $100m (£58m) fund will "invest in the best ideas from the best European entrepreneurs", according to Bill Maris, managing partner at Google Ventures, overseeing the project. "We believe Europe's start-up scene has enormous potential." The new operation will be based near London's Silicon Roundabout start-up district. But Google is open to further geographic expansion in the future. "We've seen compelling new companies emerge from places like London, Paris, Berlin, the Nordic region and beyond - SoundCloud, Spotify, Supercell and many others," Mr Maris writes in a blog to announce the new fund. FIFA has suspended Nigeria from international football citing government interference in the running of its national federation. The emergency committee of the world governing body said the blanket ban would come into to place with "immediate effect" which means no Nigerian team, including club sides, can play in regional, continental or international competitions. In the wake of Nigeria's exit to France at the last 16 of the World Cup, the high court of the West African country ruled that its federation would cease to run the national team, handing over the role to a government civil servant. This is in breach of a FIFA rules that obliges member associations to manage their own affairs "independently and with no influence from third parties," it said in a statement. Stephen Keshi, the coach of the African champions, resigned the day after the 2-0 defeat, after leading the Super Eagles out of the group stages of the World Cup for the first time since 1998.

A new wave of Israeli airstrikes battered areas of Gaza early Thursday, continuing the deadly onslaught aimed at stopping militant rocket fire into Israel. The days-long aerial bombardment of Gaza has killed 81 Palestinians, including women and children, and injured more than 500 since it began Monday, Palestinian officials said. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the offensive would be expanded and continue "until the firing at our communities stops and quiet is restored." But there was no sign that Hamas and other militant groups in Gaza were backing down as rockets continued to streak over the border into southern Israel. No Israelis have been killed so far in the rocket attacks.
