Resident doctor dies of Lassa fever in OAU Teaching Hospital

An unidentified resident doctor at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex (OAUTHC), Osun State, has died of Lassa Fever. According to the Chairman of the hospital's committee on Lassa Fever, Prof. Adedeji Onayade, the unidentified doctor died on Monday January 18th. The cause of his death was only confirmed yesterday January 20th after his blood sample was taken to the diagnostic center for test.  "The resident doctor’s death on Monday at the hospital was caused by Lassa fever. The result of the first test carried out on the sample of the deceased tested positive and we have a report back and the result came as positive. We were supposed to do two tests, but the patient was dying when we took the first sample. We can’t do the second test now. So, we can say it is 50 per cent. But we are going ahead to take necessary steps. We have informed those who should know.”he said

The presidential committee investigating arms procurement between 2007 and 2015 has started a fresh investigation into the purchases of equipment by the Army during the period,  The PUNCH  has learnt. A top operative of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, who confided in one of our correspondents on Wednesday, said the commission was expecting another report from the presidential panel. According to him, three former Army and Naval chiefs will be required to “clarify grey areas on arms purchased during their tenure.” He said the presidential panel would submit a report to the Presidency, which would be forwarded to the EFCC. The President had, on August 31, set up a committee, headed by the National Security Adviser, Maj. Gen. Babagana Mungono (retd.), to investigate arms procurement between 2007 and 2015. FUTMINNA PALAVA

Over 460 students of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, Niger State, (FUTMINNA) have been asked by management of the institution to withdraw due to poor performances in the just concluded academic session. Letters of withdrawal were served last Friday on the affected students who were said to be 100 level students that were not able to meet with the academic requirement stipulated by the NUC to move to the next level of their study which is Grade Point of 1.5. Investigation shows that virtually all the faculties in the institution were affected by the withdrawal.

Burkina Faso elect new President

After nearly three decades of autocratic rule followed by a civil uprising, Burkina Faso has a new leader. Roch Marc Christian Kabore won more than 53% of votes in Sunday's elections, according to  an official tally . The results mean Kabore, a former Prime Minister of the West African nation, will become its next President.
