LIONEL MESSI'S RETIREMENT: AN UNEXPECTED END

Image
When he came in the 2005 U-20 World Cup Championship in Holland, nobody knew that 11 years later, he would be gone. No one ever thought it would end like this.  After losing three previous Copa America finals, Lionel Messi on Sunday night had another chance to win. Argentina and Chile were locked in a scoreless tie, and the match would be decided by penalty kicks. Messi bent down to adjust the ball and backed up to get a running start. The five-time FIFA Ballon d'Or winner licked his lip, gave the goalie a quick appraising glance, and sent a cannonball-like shot over the goal, missing for Argentina when it mattered most.  Follow Sportdec   @Sportdec Even 5 time Ballon d'Or winner's miss. In an interview with The Punch, the CAN president urged the president to maintain religious balance so as not to open the door for lawlessness. Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Rev. Samson Olasupo Adeniyi Ayokunle “I want to advise the present government to maintain balance and keep close to constitution irrespective of the religious belief of those in government. The government should respect the constitution of Nigeria because if the government breaks the constitution of Nigeria on religion alone, they have already opened the door for lawlessness in the society.”  He advised Islamic religious leaders to call their followers to order as some of them were not giving them honour with their actions. “They (children) are bringing disgrace to the religion of Islam; we ha

DEALING WITH STRESS- TOLULOPE OLAIFA

BY TOLULOPE OLAIFA Dealing with Stress- How not to Get Overwhelmed In Nigeria, we find ourselves facing stress on all sides- economic decline, power shortage, fuel price increase, even the “common” tomatoes we took for granted have started showing themselves. Believe it or not, accumulated stress is one of the major reasons why there has been an alarming increase in the death rate of young and middle-aged adults in Nigeria.  Unfortunately, Nigerians do not seem to understand the need to take a step back and relax for a while. Even while we are sleeping, some of us (even I’m guilty) find ourselves dreaming of unfinished work and missing deadlines. Our bodies are not built to take such amounts of stress, so once in a while, we need to take a step back and realise that life goes on, irrespective of whatever happens. These are a few tips for dealing with stress in your daily life. DO NOT GO HOME IN WORK MODE . Leave the stress of the day and of your job at the door, so that you ca

The Scrapping Of Post-UTME Does Not Mean There Won't Be Screening

Image
One of the major decisions taken at the end of the 2016 policy meeting that has all the stakeholders in the education in attendance, was that post-UTME should be scrapped. Obviously, many candidates do not understand the import of this going by the number of calls we have been receiving concerning this. Many of them think that since post-UTME has been scrapped there's not going to be any form of screening before they secure admission. For the avoidance of doubt, schools are going to still conduct screening for candidates. However, the method of screening will differ depending on the school.  Now you may wonder what's the big deal about scrapping post-UTME in the first place? The scrapping of post-UTME only means that schools are not to conduct screening exercises similar to JAMB UTME. Many schools screening exercises seem more like sitting for JAMB UTME again because the same subjects you sat for in JAMB UTME are what you are being tested on again. According to the educati

CCT adjourns Saraki’s trial over motion seeking judge’s disqualification

The Code of Conduct Tribunal in Abuja on Wednesday adjourned the trial of the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, till June 21. The tribunal adjourned for the hearing of a fresh motion filed by Saraki seeking an order of the CCT disqualifying its Chairman, Danladi Umar, from further presiding over the case. Saraki filed his fresh application accusing Umar of bias based on the remark made by the tribunal chairman at the last proceedings on June 7, 2016, while warning the defence against delay tactics. Umar made the statement that was picked up while warning the defence that their delay tactics would not “reduce the consequences the defendant will meet in this tribunal at the end of the trial”. Saraki, in his fresh application filed by his lawyer, Kanu Agabi (SAN), alleged that Umar’s statement would prejudice the outcome of the trial. At the resumed hearing in the case on Wednesday, lead defence counsel, Agabi, informed the tribunal of the motion which he said had yet to be oppose
