Jonathan worse than Nebuchadnezzar -Soyinka

Nobel Laureate, Prof Wole Soyinka, says President Goodluck Jonathan is worse than neo-Babylonian king, Nebuchadnezzar, describing Jonathan as a President that embraces impunity. Soyinka at a press conference in Lagos on Tuesday blamed Jonathan for the fracas at the National Assembly in which lawmakers resorted to scaling the gate of the Assembly complex in order to gain access to their chambers after being prevented by the police. He said although Jonathan was democratically elected, his actions had proved that he was more of a dictator. He said for instance, the split in Nigeria Governors’ Forum last year in which 16 governors had the final say over 19 other governors showed that the President was willing to do anything to achieve his political goals. Soyinka said the barring of governors by policemen from entering Ekiti State to campaign for former Governor Kayode Fayemi in June showed that Jonathan was not only a dictator but was encouraging impunity by encouraging security agents

IT'S BEEN COMING

For all the talk of Manchester United’s revival in recent weeks almost all of their Premier League victories at home have been unconvincing. But against Hull City at Old Trafford on Saturday they produced their most accomplished performance of the season, and it bodes well for Louis van Gaal’s evolution of this side. Against the likes of Crystal Palace, West Ham and Everton United haven’t effectively controlled matches on home turf, despite acquiring the points on all three occasions. That trio of victories came virtue of a world class-selection of players pushing the result over the line in the face of opposition frustration. On all three occasions endeavour and a little bit of luck were required to reach the desired result. In short, there was a lack of domination. After dismantling Hull, Van Gaal was at pains to use that word regularly in his post-match analysis, and with just cause. “We have dominated the game from the first minute to the last minute,” the Dutchman told reporters.

US sees slower Black Friday sales

The traditional scrum of sharp elbows was notably less intense on Black Friday in the US this year. The crowds, gathering at the US's big shopping centres, appeared to have exhausted some of their shopping enthusiasm on Thursday. As last year, many retailers had opened their doors early to try to pull shoppers in ahead of rivals. "The consumer clearly enjoys shopping on Thanksgiving," said Target's chief executive, Brian Cornell. And, when opening the New York Stock Exchange for Friday's shortened day of trading, he welcomed the way the holiday season "has moved from an event on Black Friday morning to a multi-day event." Many shoppers headed straight to the shops whilst still digesting their Thanksgiving turkey on Thursday, forming queues outside Macy's by 6pm on what is becoming known as "grey Thursday".

HAPPY BLACK FRIDAY

Black Friday is the day following Thanksgiving Day in the United States(the fourth Thursday of November), often regarded as the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. In recent years, most major retailers have opened very early and offered promotional sales to kick off the holiday shopping season, similar to Boxing Daysales in many Commonwealth nations. Black Friday is not a holiday, but California and some other states observe "The Day After Thanksgiving" as a holiday for state government employees, sometimes in lieu of another federal holiday such as Columbus Day.

Kumuyi asks Nigerians to ‘screen’ politicians before voting

The General Superintendent of Deeper Life Bible Church, Pastor William Kumuyi, has urged Nigerians to critically examine the manifesto of those seeking elective offices. He said this would help to determine their suitability or otherwise for election in 2015. Kumuyi gave this advice while speaking to newsmen in Ilorin. The religious leader was in llorin for the take-off of a three-day crusade by his church at Eyenkorin, on the outskirts of the state capital. The cleric described as ‘mere speculations’, insinuations about the possible break-up of Nigeria after the elections. He asked Nigerians to separate “pronouncements” from “prophecies” about the future of the country. Kumuyi said Nigerians must put hands together to elect people who would do the will of the majority in 2015. He reminded political leaders to understand that they came into office for the good of the people. Kumuyi described his visit to the north central state as one meant beyond religion and ethnicity, saying he was

NFF: WE CAN DO NOTHING

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) explained they could not fire the Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi from his position saying their hands were tied. According to a board member, the football body leadership is “helpless” in the situation. “The last time we did what we thought was best, we were forced to revert the changes by people in high places. This time around we are helpless. We are scared of announcing we won’t renew his deal due to what happened last time and unless he resigns or walks away we can’t help out.”

Sierra Leone: Ebola burial team dumps bodies

Workers employed by Sierra Leone's Ministry of Health to bury Ebola victims took drastic action this week in a dispute over pay, abandoning the bodies of 15 people in the street. Some were paraded at the entrance to a hospital Monday to stop people from entering. Another body was placed outside the entrance to a hospital administrative building. The workers have gone on strike because they say they are owed seven weeks of their "hazard" pay of $100 a week. Burying Ebola victims is a dangerous task, since the deadly virus is spread through contact with bodily fluids. The bodies were all cleared as of Tuesday after burial teams working for the Red Cross, rather than the state, were called in. The National Ebola Response Center has announced the sacking of all involved in the strike, said Sidi Yahyah Tunis, a spokesman for the center. Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea are the three West African countries at the heart of the current Ebola outbreak. The vast majority of more t

UNIJOS Releases Notice on Indefinite Closure of the School

On Monday November 24, 2014 students of the University of Jos embarked on a peaceful demonstration against certain issues. Management met and issued a release assuring students and members of the University Community that some of the issues raised by the students were nothing but rumours that had no basis. However, certain steps were taken to address all the grievances including the shifting of the Second Semester Examinations with one (1) week and the setting up of a Committee to look at the other issues. This morning, Tuesday November 25, 2014 students mobilized themselves again and blocked the Bauchi Road Highway and set tyres on fire. In order to avoid further escalation of the situation, Management met this morning and directed that the University should be closed down until further notice. Students are hereby directed to vacate the hostels on or before 2pm. Please ensure that this directive is strictly complied with. Jilli-Dandam D. Esq. Registrar

Qatar 2022 World Cup: Michel Platini wants winter staging

Image
UEFA President Michel Platini has told BBC Sport the 2022 Qatar World Cup must be played in winter. The Frenchman's stance puts him in direct opposition to some of Europe's biggest leagues and clubs, who want the event to be staged in May. The World Cup is usually held in June and July, but Fifa has been told that Qatar's searing summer temperatures will put players' health at risk. Platini said: "It'll never be in April, May or June. It will be in winter." He added the 2022 Champions League semi-finals and final could be moved to June if necessary, saying the clubs would accept whatever decision was made. "It's not the clubs that are playing, it's the players and it's not possible to play in May when it's 40 degrees," said Platini, 59.
